  1. (1872-98) an English artist, best known for his book illustrations, mostly black and white, which were much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and Japanese prints. His style, using long curved lines and a strong sense of visual design, was often openly erotic (= sexual) and considered shocking by many people. His best-known works are the illustrations for Oscar Wilde's Salome and Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur.
