  1. (1707-88) one of the people who helped to establish the Methodist Church in Britain, with his brother John Wesley. He is mainly known as the writer of over 7 000 hymns (= religious songs), many of which are still popular today. These include Love Divine, All Loves Excelling and the Christmas carolHark! the Herald Angels Sing.
