  1. (1854-1935) an Irish politician and lawyer, well known as the lawyer who questioned Oscar Wilde at his trial in 1895. He was against Home Rule in Ireland, and led the Northern Irish opposition to it. He was made a knight in 1900 and a life peer in 1921
